Our 14 Favourite Luxury Hotels in Bali (For Every Budget)

After staying in over 100 hotels in Bali over the last few years, we thought it was time to compile a guide to our favourites. Unlike any other resource, we’ve actually stayed in every single one, so we’ll tell you why we love them and who they are suited for.

We’ll also showcase some of Bali’s more affordable luxury stays, so you can enjoy the perfect trip, no matter your budget. Use our table of contents to jump between different price points.

Over $300/night

1. The Apurva Kempinski, Nusa Dua

The Apurva Kempinski is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive and luxurious resorts we’ve ever stayed at in Bali! Located in Nusa Dua, the massive, multi-level hotel is built into a cliffside and cascades down majestically towards the beach and ocean, inspired by the Balinese “subak” irrigation system.

We stayed in an ocean junior suite, which sat on an upper floor with sweeping views over the resort and ocean. Our huge, modern suite had a comfy bed, lots of space for lounging around, and a beautiful open-plan bathroom with a large marble bathtub.

The room was packed with modern smart features, including a coffee machine, smart TV, and even a hi-tech Japanese toilet. But the highlight was the large private infinity pool on the terrace, which had epic views out across the coastline.

The rest of the resort felt like an entire town, with several pools surrounded by daybeds, a family pool with water slides, a stunning white sand beach and beach club, a packed wellness and activity schedule, a luxurious spa, and 8 fantastic on-site restaurants - it's easy to get lost!

Of all the places we've stayed, this was one of the most family-friendly luxury resorts in Bali. It had a family pool with water slides (adults also welcome), a playground area, and a huge kids' club. You can even order board games or a PlayStation via room service.

The hotel is situated in a relatively secluded area, with only other resorts within walking distance. However, they provide a regular shuttle to central Nusa Dua, and the toll roads make it easy to take day trips without hitting too much traffic.

2. Munduk Moding Plantation, Munduk

Munduk Moding Plantation is our favourite hotel in North Bali. It’s part of a working coffee plantation and is one of the island’s most eco-friendly resorts. It runs on solar power, with composting, rainwater harvesting, and an on-site recycling centre.

We stayed in a one-bedroom pool villa, with a cosy bedroom, a huge bathroom with a large tub, and a separate living space with plenty of comfortable corners to relax. Our villa had a large terrace with sunbeds, a private infinity pool, and a heated jacuzzi, which was particularly welcome in Munduk's cooler climate.

Being part of a coffee plantation, our room came with a variety of different coffees and coffee-making tools, including an espresso machine, a V60, and a French Press.

Despite having our own pool, our favourite part of the resort was the two large public infinity pools, which cascaded down into the valley and had sweeping views over the jungles below.

Another thing that made our stay at Munduk Moding so special was the incredible selection of activities. We joined a coffee tour and tasting, a barista class (latte art is difficult!), a sustainability tour, a recycled jewellery making workshop, a Balinese dance class, and a local cooking class.

There are also plenty of things to do within the resort when it rains (which it does quite a bit in Munduk), including a luxury spa and sauna, a bamboo gym, and a games room with a pool table, darts, and table tennis.

3. Samanvaya, Sidemen

Samanvaya is our favourite accommodation in Sidemen, one of the most beautiful areas of Bali. Although the large, adults-only resort is technically a 4-star, we found it better than many 5-star hotels in Bali, especially their new Sari Villas, where we stayed.

Our villa was sleek and luxurious, with elegant dark wooden furnishings and beautiful carvings inspired by Balinese design. The room was well equipped, including a huge en-suite with a rain shower and bathtub, a comfy bed with a thick duvet for the cooler nights, and even a smart projector.

The best part of the villas was our large terrace and private infinity pool overlooking the Sidemen Valley, with lush green rice terraces as far as the eye could see.

Elsewhere, the resort had two infinity pools, a jacuzzi, a gym, and their new Ananda Bathhouse (discounted for guests), which had a sauna, steam room, and plunge pools. They provide a shuttle around the local area, and staff can help you organise local activities.

The resort sits along central Jalan Raya Tebola, with a handful of restaurants and cafes within walking distance. But we were happy eating at the resort's 3 onsite restaurants for something different each meal. The included breakfast was delicious, and we loved trying different Balinese treats at the afternoon tea.

We loved how sustainable Samanvaya is, with no single-use plastics and minimal waste. They also started a charity called Support Sidemen to help the local communities (we added a donation to our final bill).

4. Desa Potato Head, Seminyak

Desa Potato Head is a stylish beachfront resort that’s regularly been voted one of the “World’s 50 Best Hotels”. And after staying for here ourselves, we can definitely see why.

From the moment we arrived at the hotel’s bold, brutalist entrance, we were treated like royalty, welcomed with locally made Jamu (herbal drink) and several lovely gifts (we won’t spoil the surprise).

We stayed in a small, but super stylish studio, with modern wooden features and sustainably crafted furnishings. The most unique feature was the free “maxi bar,” which included a range of infused spirits and bitters, a fridge full of mixers, an ice box, and a complete cocktail-making set with recipes.

There's a dedicated ocean-facing infinity pool for hotel guests, or we could reserve daybeds at Potato Head Beach Club, one of our favourite beach clubs in Bali, without any minimum spend.

Their onsite Dome restaurant has some of the best food we've eaten in Bali (and we've tried a lot!), while their Sunset Park rooftop bar was the perfect spot for sunset cocktails.

Other facilities included a modern gym, a beautiful spa, kids' club, fitness and yoga sessions, and a packed schedule of activities. We loved the Jamu-making class and the hotel’s sustainability tour.

On the tour, we learnt that Potato Head is one of the most eco-friendly resorts in Bali. Almost all waste from the hotel and beach club is reused or recycled into furniture, candles, and souvenirs. They do A LOT to help the planet and the local community, such as planting mangroves or supporting local education.

The hotel's location is perfect if you love being right in the heart of everything, with the beach on one side and the main road on the other, where you can easily walk to many shops, restaurants, and bars.

5. Maya Sanur

Maya is a Balinese-owned brand with hotels in Ubud and Sanur. We stayed at Maya Sanur, which is a modern 5-star beachfront property with lots of Balinese touches.

The location was perfect, with the beach on one side and Sanur's main street on the other. Rue, one of the hotel's restaurants, serves an amazing brunch, though there are lots of other options walkable.

Our suite was among the nicest rooms we’ve experienced in a hotel in Bali. The design was chic and modern, with warm wooden furnishings and decorative touches that gave it a distinctly Balinese feel.

While we didn’t have a private pool (it was a lot extra), our room had direct access to the lagoon pool outside. We had a huge bathtub, a sofa, daybeds, a Nespresso machine, and a comfy king-sized bed. There was even a pillow menu to customise the material and firmness.

While the room was most impressive, the rest of the hotel was typical for a 5-star resort. It had all the facilities you’d expect, including an ocean-facing infinity pool, a gym, a spa, etc. Bicycles were complimentary for 2 hours per day, which we used to cycle along the boardwalk.

All of the hotel staff were extremely friendly, and we had a 24-hour butler service via WhatsApp, although we didn’t make much use of this service.

6. Hideout, Sidemen

Hideout isn’t your typical hotel, but a beautiful eco-retreat with a collection of unique bamboo villas set among nature, just north of Sidemen. Each of Hideout’s villas has a distinctive design, from multi-level treehouse villas with infinity pools to cosy cabins overlooking the river.

These photos are from our stay in Hideout Falcon, a modern bamboo house perfectly hidden within its own beautiful, secluded garden.

Our villa had a large bed with a mosquito net, an indoor seating area with sofas, a small kitchenette and dining table, and a large open-air bathroom. The house wasn’t fully closed off from the outside, but we didn’t have any issues with bugs at all.

Outside was a large wooden deck with lounge chairs, a netted area for chilling under the palm trees, several cosy nooks, and a large stone bathtub. We even had a small koi pond with fish we could feed.

The staff organised an in-room massage followed by a flower bath in the heated tub, which was one of the highlights of our stay, despite the sudden downpour, which only added to the serene atmosphere.

The location is a little remote, so you won’t find any bars or restaurants near Hideout. But the onsite kitchen can deliver food directly to your villa. We wouldn’t recommend basing yourself here for your entire Bali trip, but it’s a perfect romantic escape for a couple of nights.

7. Kaamala Resort & Spa, Ubud

If you’re looking for a luxury hotel in Ubud, Kaamala Resort & Spa is our top pick. The boutique resort is just a short drive from the busy town centre (walkable in 10 minutes), yet remains peaceful with rice terraces and jungle views.

There are a handful of spacious suites and luxurious villas to pick from. We stayed in the royal one-bedroom rice field view villa, and were blown away by everything about it.

Our villa was contemporary and stylish, with a comfy bed, vanity area, and large bathtub. It was very well equipped, including a smart TV, a Nespresso machine, and an Alexa smart speaker connected to the lights and air-con.

We spent most of our time enjoying the large terrace where our private infinity pool overlooked the rice terraces, complete with deckchairs and even a hammock.

The hotel is close to Ubud Monkey Forest, so some mornings we’d wake up to cheeky monkeys passing by our terrace. They are harmless, provided you don't leave any food out.

Elsewhere in the resort is a huge infinity pool overlooking the jungle, a luxury Savaha Spa, and 3 on-site restaurants, including an all-day European bistro, a Japanese teppanyaki restaurant, and the unique 7 Paintings immersive dining experience, where you help paint your own dinner.

8. Desa Oculus, Kintamani

If you’re planning on spending a couple of nights in Kintamani during your Bali trip (which we'd definitely recommend doing), Desa Oculus is our favourite place to stay in the region.

Sitting on the volcanic crater ridge, Oculus has an unusual industrial chic design and is most famous for its giant concrete stairs that lead up to one of its two(!!) rooftop infinity pools.

We stayed in a deluxe lake view room, which was spacious, stylish, and had a balcony with the most stunning view over Lake Batur (with a glimpse of Mount Batur to the west)!

The large stone bathtub was perfect for enjoying a long, peaceful soak after our early morning Mount Batur adventure. Emily used it at least 4-5 times in the few days we stayed here!

On the roof of our building was O Club, their on-site pool club with a large heated infinity pool and a spectacular panoramic view. The hotel also has 2 on-site restaurants: Kaki Gunung, which specialises in upscale Indonesian dishes, and Kedisan Lounge, which serves delicious Western tapas.

Oculus is in an ideal location, just off Penelokan Main Road, with Kintamani’s famous cafes in one direction and the volcano’s base (for sunrise trekking tours) in the other. The five-storey hotel doesn’t have an elevator, so prepare for lots of walking up and down stairs.

9. Amora Ubud Boutique Villas

Amora Ubud is another of our favourite adults-only boutique resorts in Ubud, with private villas surrounded by tropical greenery, creating a quiet, secluded atmosphere. We stayed in a romance river pool villa, which overlooked the valley and river below.

Our open-plan villa was one of the biggest we’ve experienced inside a resort, with a modern, minimalist style featuring terracotta walls and concrete textures. It had a large king bed, a living area with a sofa and a smart TV, a spacious dressing area, a bathroom, and a huge separate shower room.

The floor-to-ceiling glass doors opened straight out to the terrace, which had a generous swimming pool, a large daybed, a sunken lounge area, and a stone bathtub, all positioned to enjoy the breathtaking jungle views.

If the private pool wasn’t enough, the resort has a huge public infinity pool with daybeds and floating beanbags. Their Birdhill Restaurant serves a mix of Western and Asian dishes, but it was their modern Indonesian dishes that were our favourite.

Our room required quite a few steps to reach it, which kept us fit during our stay. The garden villas are a little more accessible if stairs are an issue for you.

Although Amora looks close to the town centre, the driving route around the valley takes at least 20 minutes. You can also walk into Ubud Town Centre in just 20 minutes via the scenic Campuhan Ridge Walk, although it's not the most accessible after dark.

10. Tandjung Sari, Sanur

Tandjung Sari is a little different from many of the more contemporary hotels we’ve mentioned already. It’s a historic boutique hotel set among a stunning beachfront garden. It's a good choice for those who want a luxury beachfront hotel in Bali without sacrificing charm or authenticity.

Founded in the 1960s by an Indonesian couple, it’s one of Bali’s first-ever boutique hotels. Yet it really didn't feel dated, and we could see the work that’s gone into it over the years.

The hotel is set within a beautifully-manicured garden, filled with flowers, fountains, and pergolas, that stretches from the road all the way to the beachfront.

Our thatched-roof bungalow was surrounded by greenery and had a traditional yet elegant style, with wooden beams, antique furnishings, and Balinese history books on the table. Outside, we had a small Balinese-style ‘bale’ (gazebo), which was perfect for enjoying a peaceful morning coffee.

The hotel is also home to one of the best local restaurants in Sanur, a small library, a swimming pool, and a beautiful private beachfront area with sun loungers for guests. Located in a small cove, the waves here are calm, so it’s one of the best places for taking a dip in the ocean along Sanur Beach.

Tandjung Sari sits along our favourite stretch of Sanur's coastline, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and the large ICON mall just a short walk along the lively boardwalk.

During our stay, the other guests were mostly couples or older groups. With not many on-site activities, it’s probably not the best hotel for families with younger children to keep entertained.

11. The Laguna, Nusa Dua

While The Apurva Kempinski is our top pick in Nusa Dua, if you’d prefer staying somewhere more central and walkable to bars, restaurants, and cafes, The Laguna by Marriott is another accommodation we really enjoyed here.

Located in central Nusa Dua (known as the ITDC district), The Laguna is a large, beachfront hotel with direct access to the Nusa Dua boardwalk. The hotel is set around 7 huge outdoor lagoon-style pools, which wrap around the buildings and out towards the beach.

Our deluxe king room was contemporary and spacious (much like any Marriott hotel), with subtle Balinese touches, such as a traditional offering bowl filled with local fruits.

It had a comfy bed and a lovely balcony overlooking the pools and gardens. However, if we stayed again, we’d probably pick one of the lagoon access rooms instead.

The hotel’s numerous pools meant there was always somewhere to hang out. The main beachfront pool was the biggest and busiest, with lots of seating and floating beanbags (and turkeys running around for some unknown reason), while the other lagoons had quieter areas with private cabanas.

The hotel also had beachfront sun beds, several on-site bars and restaurants, a spa, and a fitness centre. They hold cultural dances, traditional craft sessions, and themed movie screenings. There was no kids’ club, which seemed unusual for a Marriott, but there were still many families during our stay.

Under $200/night

12. Candi Beach Resort & Spa, East Bali

If you want to enjoy a luxury beachfront hotel, but don’t want to pay a small fortune, Candidasa Beach Resort & Spa is a great pick. The resort is spread across tropical gardens, backed by a beautiful white sand bay.

We paid a premium for the luxury ocean view suite, which came with a big balcony and our very own jacuzzi. But you don’t need to splash out on the best rooms to enjoy this resort, as the setting and facilities are what make it great.

There are three communal pools, including a large infinity pool overlooking the sandy bay and one with a swim-up bar. It has an on-site gym and spa, and the staff can organise activities or day trips for you.

The onsite restaurants serve tasty Western food, especially Basil, their Italian restaurant. However, when we wanted local food, we preferred eating at some of the other local restaurants in Candidasa.

Candi Beach Resort is around a 5-minute drive from central Candidasa, where there are a handful of shops, restaurants, and bars with live music in the evening. While you could walk, it's a busy main road, so we wouldn't suggest it. The resort offers a free shuttle, and taxis are affordable.

13. Sumberkima Hill Retreat, Northwest Bali

If you’re prepared to drive 4+ hours from the airport to West Bali, you can enjoy some of Bali’s most incredible nature and some of the most affordable luxury hotels.

Sumberkima Hill Retreat is our favourite; a serene hilltop getaway, with sweeping views over the Northwest Bali coastline. It’s a welcome escape from the busy resort areas of the south and a chance to explore a more authentic side of the island.

Sumberkima Hill feels more like a small village, with over 50 villas, rooms, and cabins to choose from, along with several huge pools, two restaurants, and a spa. Spread over a large hillside area, each accomodation still feels private and peaceful.

We tried out their new glamping-style cabins (pictured above), which were cosy, comfortable, and had stunning views from the giant netted hammock. However, after peeking inside the villas, we would definitely recommend spending a little more to stay in one of those.

The staff went out of their way to make our stay perfect. We had a dedicated WhatsApp chat with a team of people who could arrange shuttles around the resort, room service, and lots of activities. We also loved their commitment to sustainability – we even planted baby corals with their sister charity.

While the resort may be in a quiet part of Bali, there’s no shortage of facilities and activities in Sumberkima and nearby Pemuteran to keep you entertained for several days, including West Bali National Park just a short drive away.

14. The Grand Villandra, Lovina

If a 3+ hour drive from the airport doesn't scare you, Lovina is a great base for exploring North Bali. It's got great tourist infratructue, but your money will go much further than in the busier south.

We’ve stayed in many hotels in Lovina, but The Grand Villandra is definitely our favourite, a modern and luxurious beachfront resort just to the east of the town centre.

Our deluxe king room was an absolute steal. It was modern and elegant, with an incredibly comfortable bed, desk, smart TV, and balcony overlooking the garden. The large private pool villas are also fantastic value if you want a little more space.

The resort had two main pools, a long lagoon pool close to the deluxe rooms and another large infinity pool right on the beachfront. There’s direct access to the black sand beach in front, where you can swim in the calm water or rent a kayak or paddleboard.

The main restaurant also overlooks the beach and was the perfect spot to enjoy breakfast each morning and evening drinks while we watched the live music around sunset. There’s a small on-site spa, a gym, and a games room with a pool table and table tennis.

There’s not too much within walking distance of the hotel, but it’s only a 5-minute drive into central Lovina using the hotel's regular free shuttle. There, you’ll find dozens of bars, restaurants, and cafes along the beachfront.

Where do celebrities stay in Bali?
