Our 7 Favourite Boutique Luxury Hotels in Ubud, Bali

It's no secret that Ubud is home to some of the most gorgeous and luxurious hotels in Bali, with everything from tranquil jungle hideaways to chic, modern villa resorts overlooking the rice terraces.

If you’re trying to decide where to stay in Ubud and want something more personal than a big resort, the area's many boutique hotels hit the sweet spot - intimate, beautifully designed, and surrounded by nature. These are our favourite boutique luxury hotels in Ubud, complete with our first-hand experience staying at each one.

Kaamala Resort & Spa

The Room:

Kaamala has a handful of spacious suites and luxurious villas to pick from. We stayed in the Royal One-Bedroom Rice Field View Villa and were blown away by absolutely everything about it.

Our villa was contemporary and stylish, with a comfy bed, vanity area, and large bathtub. It was packed with modern amenities, including a smart TV, a proper coffee machine, and an Alexa smart speaker. Watch our full room tour here.

But the real highlight was definitely our large terrace and private infinity pool overlooking the rice terraces, complete with deckchairs and a hammock. Despite the central location, the pool felt very secluded and quiet, perfect for a romantic escape.

The Resort:

If the private villa pool wasn't enough already, Kaamala also has a huge public infinity pool overlooking the jungle for when you need a change of scenery.

There are three on-site restaurants to choose from, which is a lot for a boutique hotel in Ubud of this size!

Habitat Bistro offers casual all-day dining by the main pool. Shichirin is an upmarket spot for Japanese teppanyaki, where the food is cooked on a flat iron grill in front of you. There's also the unique 7 Paintings immersive dining experience, where you help paint your own dinner.

Other on-site facilities at the resort include the luxurious Svaha Spa, one of our favourite spa chains in Bali, which offers some amazing pampering packages and stunning jungle views while you relax.

The Location:

Kaamala is located on "Jalan Bisma," just a 10-minute walk to downtown Ubud. It's an ideal location if you want to be close to the bustling town centre.

The only thing to be mindful of is that the hotel is very close to Ubud Monkey Forest, so you’ll sometimes spot cheeky monkeys running across the rooftop - just don't leave any food on your terrace or you may get some visitors!

Amora Boutique Villas

The Room:

Amora is a romantic adults-only Ubud resort with four distinct villa types to choose from. All villas feature a private pool and are surrounded by tropical greenery, creating a quiet, secluded atmosphere. We stayed in a Romance River Pool Villa, which overlooked the valley and river.

Our open-plan villa was one of the biggest rooms we've ever stayed in, with a modern, minimalist style featuring terracotta walls and concrete textures. It had a large king bed, a living area with a sofa and a smart TV, a spacious dressing area, a bathroom, and a huge separate shower room.

The room's floor-to-ceiling glass doors opened straight out to the terrace. The private terrace was also huge, with a generous swimming pool, a large daybed, a sunken lounge area, and a stone bathtub, all positioned to enjoy the breathtaking view over the valley. This is where we spent most of our stay!

The River Pool Villa was one of the furthest rooms down into the valley from the resort entrance, so there were quite a few steps to reach it. The Garden Villas are a little more accessible if stairs are an issue for you.

The Resort:

If you can draw yourself away from your villa, Amora also has a huge public infinity pool with daybeds and floating beanbags, overlooked by the on-site Birdhill Restaurant.

The restaurant serves a mix of Western and Asian dishes, but it was their modern Indonesian dishes that were our favourite. We also enjoyed a gorgeous romantic dinner in a private veranda overlooking the valley one night, which you can book through the hotel for an extra fee.

The Location:

Amora is in a stunning location among the jungles just north of Ubud. There are a handful of other resorts and cafes in the area. You can walk from the resort into Ubud Town Centre in around 20 minutes via the scenic Campuhan Ridge Walk.

However, if you're coming and going by scooter or car (especially at night when you can't walk), you'll have to take the longer driving route up and around the valley and back down into town, which takes at least 20 minutes, depending on traffic.

Puri Gangga Resort

The Room:

Puri Gangga is a small luxury hotel in Ubud with both deluxe rooms and private pool villas. We stayed in the Rice Field Pool Villa, which had a lovely little terrace and plunge pool overlooking the neighbouring rice field.

Our villa was located inside a thatched-roof Joglo-style building and had a traditional Balinese feel to it, with a large four-poster bed, rustic wood furnishings, and a beautifully carved doorway leading into the spacious bathroom.

The highlight had to be the huge marble bathtub with wrap-around windows overlooking the tropical scenery outside. It was the perfect spot to enjoy a romantic flower bath with a glass of wine. Kieren particularly enjoyed watching the family of ducks that lived in the rice field outside.

The Resort:

Despite its quiet location, Puri Gangga has a fantastic variety of on-site cultural activities to keep you busy. You can join free yoga each morning, learn how to make Balinese offerings, and take part in a private cooking class in the restaurant. We made Dadar Gulung, our favouite local dessert!

The resort offers a guided walk around Sebatu Village and a water purification experience at the neighbouring temple, which we loved and much preferred to the busier Titra Empul Water Temple nearby.

There's also a large infinity pool, a lovely on-site spa, and a great restaurant that hosts a cultural dinner and dance performance every week.

The Location:

Puri Gangga is located in Sebatu Village, a peaceful spot surrounded by nature, around 30 minutes north of Ubud. This is what most people imagine when they picture Ubud, with its lush rice terraces and tropical landscapes.

Sebatu is located far enough away from the noise and traffic of the town centre to enjoy a peaceful getaway, yet it still has a good amount to do nearby.

The resort directly overlooks Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu, a stunning Balinese water temple located at the base of a lush valley, which you can see from the main pool and restaurant. You can walk to the temple to take part in a purification ritual.

The village has a handful of restaurants and spas - we loved Sambal Matah Cafe. It's also close to many of the major attractions of northern Ubud, including the famous Tegallalang Rice Terraces, Titra Empul Water Temple, and Gunung Kawi ancient site, which are all around a 10-minute drive/taxi away.

The location is best suited for those looking for a relaxing escape in nature and to see the authentic, cultural side of Bali. It's less ideal if you're looking to enjoy downtown Ubud's dining, shopping, and nightlife scene.

The Stone House

The Room:

The Stone House is a gorgeous little rustic-chic boutique hideaway, tucked away in Ubud's jungles. It has just six villas, each with its own unique design, but all crafted from eco-friendly materials such as salvaged timber, bamboo, and stone, blending naturally with the lush surroundings.

We've stayed in two of the Stone House's villas: the Treehouse and the Farmhouse.

The Treehouse is an amazing bamboo structure suspended in the jungle on eight-meter stilts. The villa is entirely open-air (with just oversized curtains closing it from the outside world), offering a luxury glamping-style experience.

Our favourite features were the huge round bamboo bed, the wrap-around netted hammock, and the large copper bathtub with stunning views over the jungle and rice fields. Definitely one of the most unique stays in Ubud!

We also stayed in the Farmhouse, which sits inside a traditional Javanese building, nestled within the property's organic farm. The villa mixes traditional rustic charm with modern luxury, decorated with wooden furnishings and antique decorations collected from the owner's travels across Asia.

While the Treehouse offers a unique novelty stay, the Farmhouse is definitely somewhere you could base yourself for a longer stay in Ubud. Read our full review of our stay at the Stone House, with more details and images of each room!

The Resort:

As well as the six villas, the Stone House also has a communal pool surrounded by nature and a safari-style lodge where you can enjoy a home-cooked meal by the private chefs, play a game of chess, or mingle with other guests and staff.

The entire property has handcrafted architecture, lush organic gardens, and furniture made by the owner, Walker. You could spend forever just wandering around admiring the many quirky knick-knacks, fascinating books, and beautiful artwork and sculptures.

The staff at the Stone House are also some of the friendliest and most welcoming we've encountered, ready to help with anything you need! We'll never forget the delicious, freshly baked cookies delivered to our room each evening.

The Location:

The Stone House is hidden within a beautiful greenery-filled garden, just a 5-10 minute drive north of downtown Ubud. It's easy to call a Grab or Gojek from here if you don't have your own transport.

Located on "Jalan Tirta Tawar," there are several other luxury eco-villas and small retreat centres close by, but no big resorts. There are also a handful of shops, restaurants, and cafes within walking distance of the hotel.

Asvara Resort Ubud

The Room:

Asvara is a brand-new boutique villa resort in Ubud (opened mid 2025), with a collection of contemporary one and two-bedroom villas.

Our one-bedroom villa featured traditional Balinese architecture, with high vaulted ceilings and teak and rattan furnishings, blended with modern design features and plenty of smart amenities, including an Alexa speaker. Watch our room tour.

The open-air villa had a living space with a cosy seating area, which, if we're honest, we didn't use much, except for enjoying a lovely afternoon tea that was delivered directly to our room.

The huge bathroom was one of the most impressive features, with large LED-lit mirrors that gave it a chic and luxurious vibe. It really felt like something out of a movie - the perfect backdrop for a girls' night out getting-ready montage. I've never felt so inclined to hang out in a bathroom before!

Directly in front of the bed, sliding glass doors led out to our private pool, which had two submerged sun beds perfect for relaxing in the sunshine, complete with a gorgeous outdoor jacuzzi.

One small yet unique feature we have to mention is that the villa had a drinking water tap with filtered water. This is the first time we've had this at any hotel in Ubud (or Bali for that matter), and it was so much nicer (and more eco-friendly) than constantly asking for bottles of drinking water.

Plus, Asvara is one of the best value for money stays of any boutique hotel in Ubud, with these huge luxury pool villas costing as little as 2,500,000 IDR ⓘ a night.

The Resort:

Even though every villa has its own pool, Asvara Resort also has a beautiful public infinity pool overlooking the surrounding rice terraces, with sun beds and a bar area for enjoying sunset cocktails (and one of the funniest and most enthusiastic bartenders we've met!).

Also overlooking the pool is the resort's on-site Flairs Restaurant, a stunning Thai restaurant which did an incredible Pad Thai, among other authentic dishes. There are a few other Indonesian and Western dishes available for something different.

There's a small Svaha Spa within the hotel, which has gorgeous views but only one treatment room, so make sure to book early.

The Location:

Asvara Resort is surrounded by tropical greenery just outside quiet Kelusa Village, a 30-minute drive north of downtown Ubud. There's not much in the hotel's immediate vicinity other than a few luxury resorts, so you'll need to use a rental scooter or taxis to get around.

Cretya Sunset, one of our favourite Ubud pool clubs, is less than a 10-minute drive away, while the famous Tegallalang Rice Terraces are 15 minutes away. The starting point of several of Ubud's top ATV and rafting adventures, including the popular Kuber Adventures, are also just 10 minutes away.

Terra Sayan

The Room:

Terra Sayan is another tiny boutique hotel in Ubud, with just six stylish eco-luxury villas in a row, surrounded by lush green rice fields in every direction.

Our room was modern yet cosy, with warm earthy tones and natural materials that reflect the resort’s close connection to nature. It had a huge comfy bed, a large desk, and a seating area.

Outside, we had a cute little private pool overlooking the gardens and rice terraces. Despite the open layout, it still felt private enough to enjoy a morning dip in peace. However, the close proximity of the other villas does mean you can occasionally hear your neighbours.

While we would call these rooms rather than villas, Terra Sayan does offer incredible value for money, with their beautiful and spacious pool rooms costing as little as 1,100,000 IDR ⓘ a night!

The Resort:

The word "Terra" means "land" or "earth" in Latin, and Terra Sayan is all about celebrating and honouring the Balinese connection to the land, which you can see all across the hotel.

There are several small gardens filled with vegetables, herbs, and medicinal plants, including ginger, chilis, eggplant, tomato, turmeric, and lemongrass.

These veggies and herbs are used in the hotel's lovely farm-to-kitchen restaurant, Ferméto, which sits within an on-site building inspired by the lumbung padi (traditional rice barn). It has a seasonal menu that offers many creative takes on Balinese flavours - the Ayam Betutu croquettes were our fave!

Other than the restaurant, Terra Sayan doesn't have any other on-site guest facilities. However, you can book in-room spa treatments, as well as a garden visit and cooking class at the restaurant.

The Location:

Terra Sayan is located in the quiet yet upmarket Sayan neighbourhood, just west of downtown Ubud. It's far enough from the town centre to offer a tranquil stay in nature, but close enough that there's plenty to do nearby.

The Sayan area itself has several upmarket restaurants and bars, including Sayan Point, our favourite sunset spot in Ubud. Just 5 minutes away, the stylish Penestanan neighbourhood has lots of great coffee shops and yoga studios. Downtown Ubud is around a 10-minute drive away.

However, the hotel's stunning location within the rice terraces does come with a price. The roads leading to the property are quite narrow and not accessible by car.

This isn't a problem if you’re traveling by bike (like we were), but otherwise, the hotel provides a convenient golf-buggy-style shuttle service to take you to and from the main road whenever needed.

Amarea Resort

The Room:

Amarea Resort has a variety of deluxe rooms, cottages, and private villas to choose from. We stayed in their brand-new Grand One Bedroom Villa with Private Pool. This villa was located inside an unusual thatch-roofed round building, which reminded us of an Italian trulli house.

The villa had a separate bedroom, a living room area, a semi-outdoor bathroom, and a terrace with a small pool, all flowing from one to another in a curving, open-plan layout. It was super cosy and homely, with unique wall art and playful design elements like quirky lamps. See our full room tour.

Our terrace was filled with greenery and had a verandah seating area, a small lagoon-style pool, and a large stone jacuzzi. While we made plenty of use of the jacuzzi, the pool was rather small and shaded, so we didn't use it much (preferring the main pool instead).

Like all luxury hotels in Ubud managed by Ini Vie Hospitality (one of our go-to Indonesian hospitality brands), the room was packed with fantastic modern features, including a large smart TV, coffee machine, mini-bar, and Alexa speaker.

The Resort:

Amarea Resort also has a lovely garden area for all guests, with a two-tiered infinity pool overlooking a river (I loved the sound of the flowing water!), sunbathing space, a small yoga shala, and an on-site Svaha Spa Teges.

Sitting just above reception in the main building was Amarea's on-site restaurant, Norii. Norii is an elegant Japanese restaurant specialising in yakitori (skewers), sushi, and rice bowls. The Robatayaki Beef was our favourite dish and a must-try!

The hotel offers a wide selection of add-ons and experiences, including flower baths, room decorations, private candlelight dinners, and more, making it ideal for a romantic stay or special occasion.

The Location:

Amarea is one of the only luxury Ubud hotels on this list that's located in the south of town. It sits on a quiet backstreet in an area that's mostly villas, houses, and resorts, just a 10-minute drive to the centre.

The famous Goa Gajah Elephant Cave Temple, one of Ubud's top attractions, is just 5 minutes away. It's also in the direction of some of Ubud's most popular waterfalls, including Sumampan Waterfall, Kanto Lampo Waterfall, and Tegenungan Waterfall.
