A Food Lovers Guide to the Best Restaurants in Canggu [+ Map]

Canggu is Bali’s foodie capital, which is one of the main reasons we base ourselves here. Once a quiet surf town, it’s now a hub for nomads and expats from across the world, bringing a wide range of international flavours with them.

While best known for its amazing brunch scene, there are hundreds of amazing restaurants in Canggu that serve everything you could possibly crave, from wood-fired pizza and huge Aussie burgers to Middle-Eastern Meze, Argentinian BBQ, delicious Chinese dumplings, and, of course, diverse Indonesian flavours.

Having eaten our way around the area multiple times over the last three years, we've (just about) managed to narrow down a list of our absolute favourite places to eat in Canggu, from local warungs to fine dining and beyond.

Best Restaurants in Canggu to Treat Yourself

1. Mostly

Located in the upmarket neighbourhood of Pererenan, Mostly is our current favourite restaurant in Canggu for a date night or special occasion, with its beautiful design, romantic low-lit ambience, and delicious Asian-fusion cuisine.

The restaurant has a gorgeous interior, with wooden furnishings, trees growing through the building, plenty of indoor greenery, and soft lighting, creating a cozy, nature-inspired setting that still feels effortlessly elegant.

The Asian(ish) menu features a blend of Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese flavours, including creative takes on sushi, ramen, laksa, pho, dumplings, and more. But the best thing we've ever ordered here was the premium wagyu steaks. It's the best steak we've tried in Canggu!

Mostly is one of the most popular restaurants in Canggu right now, so make sure to reserve if you're planning to go during dinner peak times.

2. ARTE

Arte Canggu is a stylish spot close to Pererenan Beach that’s part Italian eatery and part contemporary art gallery. But most importantly, it’s where you’ll find our absolute favourite pizza in Canggu. We're obsessed and come here far too often!

Their wood-fired Neopolitan-style pizzas are as delicious and authentic as they come – light, soft dough with pillowy crusts and fresh, high-quality toppings. The menu is inspired by different regions of Italy. Our go-to is the Pugliese, covered in gooey stracciatella cheese with tomatoes and basil.

You can also enjoy antipasto plates, fresh customisable salads, and handmade pasta prepared daily, followed by indulgent Italian desserts. Don't miss the live jazz nights every Wednesday.

3. Smoke

If you're a meat-lover like us, Smoke is a must-visit! This cool BBQ restaurant in Canggu is spread across a spacious garden. It aims to recreate the rustic charm of a camping trip, with open-fire cooking and relaxed outdoor dining at long communal tables (perfect for groups).

Their slow‑and‑low barbecued meats are truly out of this world, with beef brisket, crispy pork belly, chicken thighs, and more, all cooked in the open-air kitchen. We chose to order a variety of meats by weight to create our own sharing platter with a few sides. The Mac n Cheese went perfectly with the smoked meat!

Another of our favourite things about Smoke is that at the end of the meal, we were given marshmallows to roast at the open fire pits around the garden. Such a fun and unique way to end a fantastic meal.

4. Masonry

Masonry (previously Mason) is an upscale, Mediterranean-inspired Modern Australian restaurant on central Batu Bolong, with an elegant minimalist decor and spacious open-air courtyard that makes it a popular date-night spot.

Masonry prides itself on making all of its food from scratch using local, organic ingredients wherever possible. To start, our favourites are their tasty homemade Halloumi with honey and mint, in-house cured meats, and burnt chilli hummus.

For main course, there's a focus on high-quality seafood and meats. We loved the slow-cooked lamb shoulder, but we've heard that the wood-fired barramundi fillet is also popular. For something lighter, get a selection of their small plates and pair with a creative cocktail or two.

5. Bar Vera

Bar Vera is an upmarket European restaurant and bar in Canggu with a cool open-air vibe and a creative menu featuring many fantastic flavours. The menu wasn't the biggest, but it had so many great options that we still felt a little overwhelmed trying to pick.

Eventually, we ordered their famous potato bread (definitely worth the hype), pumpkin pithivier (a beautifully presented pie), and the green pea and asparagus risotto. The risotto was one of the most incredible things I've eaten in a while and would highly recommend trying.

While we went all veggies, Bar Vera has a great meat offering too, including charcoal chicken, dry-aged duck, and a steak that the table next to us ordered and looked delicious - we'll be back to try it soon!

Don't forget to pair your dinner with one of their creative cocktails. There's even an entire martini menu for a sophisticated tipple.

6. Shelter

Shelter has long been one of the most popular date night restaurants in Canggu, with its cosy, low-lit ambiance, effortlessly cool vibe, and fantastic menu of wood-fired Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours.

The modern restaurant sits within a traditional wooden-roofed Joglo building, filled with greenery and small candle-lit tables. It's always busy enough to have a fun vibe, but spaced out enough for an intimate dinner.

While Shelter does some delicious wood-fired meats for main, we come here for the starters and sharing dishes (particularly anything with cheese!). The truffled stracciatella and stuffed eggplant were both packed with incredible and unique flavours and went perfectly with a glass of wine.

It's best to book in advance to guarantee a table at Shelter. We've only ever managed to get a tall bar table when walking in without a reservation.

7. Sa'Mesa

Sa'Mesa is more than just a restaurant. It's a lively Italian dinner club that hosts fun, family-style dinners in Canggu. There are two seatings each night, with all guests sitting together at long communal tables to share a big Italian feast and free-flow limoncello.

There's no fixed menu at Sa'Mesa. In true Italian style, the dishes change regularly. During our experience, we shared 18 dishes over four courses, including focaccia, grilled veggies, pasta, risotto, seafood, and meatballs. All dishes were incredible, and it really felt like dining in an authentic Italian trattoria.

Sa'Mesa is as much about the vibe as it is about the food. Fuelled by lots of wine and limoncello, it’s easy to make friends with other diners. The night usually escalates into dancing on the table (actively encouraged) to throwback hits. It's the best place to eat in Canggu for dinner and a party!

8. Fuego

Fuego is another great wood-fired grill restaurant in Canggu (can you tell we're meat-lovers!?), hidden in the backstreets of Pererenan. Inspired by Argentinian barbecue traditions, the homeland of the owner-chef, the restaurant is known for its smoky flavours, premium cuts of meat, and farm-to-table ingredients.

There's a short yet sweet menu of wood‑grilled specialties, like wagyu picanha, Black Angus T‑bone, lamb loin, Argentinian pork belly steak, and duck breast, as well as seafood options including octopus, black cod, and tiger prawns. There were also a handful of smaller sharing bites to start the meal.

The portion sizes were modest, but the delicious, fiery flavours more than made up for it. Make sure to order a selection of sides to go with your main dish.

9. Woods

Rustic yet sophisticated is the best way to describe Woods, another upscale restaurant in Canggu. The space has a cosy, treehouse-like vibe, made entirely from reclaimed wood with plenty of greenery and hidden nooks.

Woods serves a varied Mediterranean menu, with all dishes made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Popular dishes include pan-seared barramundi, truffle pumpkin risotto, and beetroot ravioli. There's also a creative breakfast menu, which you can pair with a botanical tea from their own Tea Library.

But our favourite thing about Woods has to be their regular live jazz and vinyl nights. Every Sunday, they serve up a proper roast dinner with a selection of meats, accompanied by live jazz. And as born and bred Brits, we can confirm the roast dinner is seriously delicious!

10. Red Gunpowder

Indian is Kieren's absolute favourite food. And no restaurant in Canggu does Indian food better than Red Gunpowder.

The restaurant specialises in claypot curries, which are rich with aromatic flavours and slow-cooked to perfection. We've only ever tried the delicious chicken curries, but you can also order them with pork, lamb, fish, paneer, tempeh, or veggies.

There are also plenty of authentic Indian side dishes and sharing plates, including aloo chaat (spiced potatoes - my fave!), samosas, daal, biriyani, naans, meat dishes, and more. We always get a few dishes to share and enjoy the variety of different flavours.

The modern restaurant is hidden within a cosy courtyard with elegant red furnishings and plenty of greenery. At night, candles light up every table, creating a romantic atmosphere. After dinner, we love to head just upstairs for a cocktail or two at The Shady Fox speakeasy.

11. Yema Kitchen

A hidden gem in Canggu, Yema Kitchen is a boutique cafe and restaurant serving Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food. During the day, we love to hang out by the pool in their beautiful garden and enjoy flavourful dishes like Turkish gozleme, homemade falafel, and fresh Lebanese tabbouleh salad.

Then, in the evening, you can order more substantial dishes like couscous, shawarma, and tajine while enjoying the pretty courtyard lit up after dark. Yema hosts a variety of evening events in its garden, including regular movie nights (every Wednesday) and lively monthly quiz nights.

In December, the restaurant becomes one of our favourite festive spots in Canggu. The courtyard gets decked out with lights, reindeer, and Santa’s sleigh, while the Christmas menu features the likes of Beef Wellington and mulled wine. For two years in a row, we booked Yema for our friends' Christmas party.

Best Casual Restaurants in Canggu

12. Milk & Madu

Milk & Madu is a Canggu institution with two busy locations in Batu Bolong and Berawa. The all-day restaurant is one of our absolute faves in Bali, and somewhere you’ll find us on an embarrassingly regular basis.

The restaurants serve Aussie comfort-food dishes, including indulgent burgers, sandwiches, chicken parma, fish and chips, and pasta.

Our go-to is their famous lava stone pizzas, which come with a variety of creative toppings. We always order the "Summer Slice", which is topped with an entire buratta (so good!). Even better, all pizzas are 2-4-1 every Tuesday and Sunday evening, making them fantastic value for money.

Both locations are large and modern, with plenty of seating for groups of all sizes. Getting a table for big groups is never an issue. You’ll also find a children’s play area in both gardens, a kids’ menu, and some indulgent freak-shakes, making this one of the most family-friendly restaurants in Canggu.

13. Penny Lane

Penny Lane has long been one of the most popular restaurants in Canggu, best known for its super-photogenic glass‑roofed venue, filled with hanging plants, colourful murals, and quirky artwork.

You'll find everything from Moroccan carpets and intricate mosaic tiles to Renaissance-style paintings (with a twist) and stained glass windows depicting hip-hop and rock legends. Visit at night to see it lit up with hundreds of fairy lights and hanging chandeliers.

Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the vibe is relatively casual, with a menu focused on Western favourites, including massive burgers, loaded fries, and supercharged schnitzels. The Mac and Cheese balls are my favourite.

14. Sista Dumpling

Sista Dumpling is a Chinese restaurant that specialises in delicious handmade dumplings (which we LOVE!), authentic hand-pulled noodles, and spicy hotpot.

They have a huge dumpling menu, featuring styles such as juicy xiao long bao, delicate gyozas, crispy pan-fried dumplings, and fluffy bao buns. Fillings range from traditional options like pork and prawn and char siu pork to inventive creations such as curry beef, wagyu cheese 'baorger', and Nutella.

The dumpling sharing combos are fantastic for trying a variety of different flavours. Plus, they look amazing. Sista Dumpling now has two restaurants in Canggu, but their original Berawa location is our favourite, with gorgeous views over the neighbouring rice terrace, especially at sunset.

15. Lacalita

La Calita is a stylish little spot on central Batu Bolong that serves modern Mexican cuisine, featuring authentic dishes such as ceviche, frijoles, and tortas, as well as delicious chocolate-covered churros.

But the real highlight here has to be their creative corn tacos, loaded with tasty toppings like al pastor and adobo-braised jackfruit. Absolutely packed with flavourful fillings, they're our favourite tacos in Canggu!

We usually go to La Calita for their great Taco Tuesdays deal, when you can enjoy 30,000 IDR ⓘ tacos and 100,000 IDR ⓘ margaritas. Don't miss their signature spicy margarita with jalapeno-infused tequila.

16. HoiAn by MeVui

Dining at Hoi An in Canggu genuinely feels like being transported to central Vietnam. The large wooden restaurant sits in a quiet part of Canggu, surrounded by beautiful gardens and lush rice terraces, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

The restaurant has a varied menu of authentic Vietnamese dishes, from classics like bánh mì sandwiches, fresh spring rolls, and various styles of phở, to bun cha Hanoi (grilled pork with vermicelli noodles), com ga (grilled chicken with rice), banh xeo crispy pancakes, and more.

Other than Indonesia, Vietnam is one of the places we spend most of our time in Asia, and we can safely say the Vietnamese food at Hoi An is some of the most delicious and authentic you'll find in Bali.

17. Santorini

Santorini is a little slice of Greece right in the heart of Canggu. Designed to resemble a traditional Greek taverna (or a scene from Mamma Mia), the restaurant has whitewashed walls, blue accents, rustic decor, and a homely vibe.

Try their mixed meze plate or create your own feast with fresh tzatziki and warm pita, grilled halloumi, flaky cheese-filled pastries, and fresh salads. We're big fans of their chicken gyros, which are just 50,000 IDR ⓘ every Monday, as well as the grilled souvlaki and their tasty moussaka.

18. 1918 Culinaria

Despite having never been to Georgia, Georgian cuisine has become one of our favourites thanks to the several fantastic Georgian restaurants in Canggu.

1918 Culinaria is our go-to, with its delicious and authentic Eastern European dishes, including indulgent khachapuri (cheese bread), khinkali (soup dumplings), and meat kebabs. With different serving sizes available, the dishes are great for both dinner for two and sharing with a big group of friends.

19. Zali

Zali is a chic Lebanese restaurant that serves home-style dishes crafted by its Beirut-born head chef. The menu offers fresh, flavorful Lebanese cuisine made with traditional recipes, including falafel, tabbouleh, fattoush, baba ghanoush, roasted cauliflower moutabbal, and labneh.

Our favourite is the saj sampler, with various freshly-baked flatbreads topped with different types of shawarma, pickles, and hummus (vegetarian options also available). The wide variety of hot and cold meze plates makes it a great place for sharing lots of dishes with friends.

20. Lola's Cantina

In the middle of Canggu's infamous shortcut, Lola’s Cantina is a spacious open-air restaurant offering a lively Mexican dining experience, with cacti, sombreros, and lots of delicious food.

There's an extensive menu of Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes, including nachos, tacos, quesadillas, tostadas, burritos, empanadas, and fajitas. All dishes are customisable with a variety of meat, seafood, and vegetable fillings and extras like cheese and guacamole.

With no shortage of tequila-based cocktails, giant frozen margarita jugs, and regular live music and events, the atmosphere in the evening is loud, lively, and perfect for a fun night of food, drinks, and music with friends. But don't expect to come to Lola's for quiet conversation.

Top Cafes and Brunch Spots in Canggu

21. Crate

Sitting within an unusual industrial-chic style concrete building, Crate Cafe is our favourite brunch spot in Canggu. The popular cafe is always packed thanks to its cool vibe (there's a DJ on weekends) and delicious yet affordable brunch dishes.

There’s a huge brunch menu to pick from, from colourful chia and smoothie bowls to loaded toasts, brekkie burritos, and absolutely gigantic salads. Many dishes are unique twists on breakfast classics, like the "Frenchie" loaded croissant and "Benz Eggs" with hashbrowns, poached eggs, and hollandaise.

Every main dish costs just 70,000 IDR ⓘ, and the portion sizes are HUGE, making it great value for money! Crate is one of the only cafes in Canggu that's self-service, so you'll need to queue and order at the counter, take a number, then find a table.

22. Avocado Factory

As the name suggests, Avocado Factory is a celebration of all things avocado. And yes, it is one of my favourite places to eat in Canggu - perpetuating the stereotype that everyone in Bali is obsessed with avocado toast!

For breakfast, you can try every type of avocado-based dish you can imagine, from the classic avo toast to the popular avo cheese croissant and the truffle benedict with avocado, eggs, and truffle hollandaise. You can even try avocado smoothies and coffee.

If you come after 11:30am, you’ll also find avocado in the burgers, salads, tacos, rice bowls, pasta sauces, and even desserts (avocado cheesecake, anyone!?). Their super-modern restaurant in Canggu has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, with lots of space for bigger groups.

23. Copenhagen Cafe

Copenhagen is a minimalistic Nordic cafe that's known for its build-your-own breakfast boards. Pick and choose from a list of bakery items, fruits and greens, eggs, proteins, and sweet treats, to create your own smorgasbord-style brekkie.

Try Scandi-style dishes, including Danish rye bread, hindbærsnitter, and the cafe’s famous cinnamon rolls (a must-order!). Or go for something more traditional, like sourdough bread with a portion of smashed avocado and a bowl of delicious crispy bacon. The waffle is delicious too.

Copenhagen’s OG Canggu cafe (here) is small yet extremely popular, with a line out the door most mornings, so be prepared to wait at least 10-15 minutes. You can also visit their newer Berawa cafe or their Pererenan bakery instead.

24. KYDN Cafe

For the ultimate Bali combo of healthy plant-based dishes and Instagrammable aesthetics, Kynd Canggu is the place to go. The popular 100% vegan cafe has a pretty all-pink decor with no end of cute, photo-worthy spots.

Kynd has some of the best vegan brunch options in Canggu, with everything from indulgent pancakes with coconut ice cream to classic savoury breakfast dishes using tempeh bacon and vegan eggs. I love the customisable smoothie bowls that you can get your name (or anything else) written on in fruit.

There's also a great selection of lunch and dinner options, including salad bowls, pastas, plant-based burgers, Mexi-bean burritos, mushroom steaks, and Asian-inspired dishes. While we're not vegan ourselves, our vegan friends absolutely love this place, and we're big fans of the food too!

Best Indonesian Food in Canggu

25. Warung Local

If it’s your first time trying Indonesian food in Canggu, Warung Local on Batu Bolong is a great starting point. A modern take on a traditional warung (local counter-style restaurant), the popular spot has plenty of tasty dishes to choose from.

Unlike other warungs, all dishes are clearly labeled in English, with notes on whether they’re vegan, gluten-free, or particularly spicy. There are also clear instructions on how to order, making it easy for newbies.

As well as the counter food, you can order freshly cooked dishes like nasi goreng (fried rice) and mie goreng (fried noodles). Local’s nasi goreng, served with chicken satay and garlic crackers, is one of the best in Canggu. They also accept card payments, which isn’t always the case at warungs.

26. Varuna Warung

Warung Varuna sits just a few minutes walk from Batu Bolong beach and was our local for a long time. In our opinion, it has one of the best counter selections of any warung in Canggu. There’s always so much variety to pick from!

The honey chicken, spicy fried tempeh, and veggie fritters are some of our favourite dishes here, but there’s plenty more on offer. There’s also a small à la carte menu of local dishes like nasi goreng, which are super affordable and always quick to arrive.

27. Warung Sika

Warung Sika is a more rustic and traditional warung in Canggu and a firm favourite among the area’s local expat community. No matter when you visit, it’s always packed. That’s how you know it’s good.

The counter is filled with authentic local dishes, from steamed veggies to curries, stews, and delicious fried chicken (my fave). But there are no signs, and it’s often too busy to ask about each dish, so you’ll have to guess — it’s part of the fun!

Once you’ve selected your dishes, you’re given a price card, and you pay after you’ve eaten. Portions are huge, and prices are cheap. The warung has large communal tables where you can meet other travellers. It’s always busy, so you’ll have to be quick to nab a seat.

28. Warung Bu Mi

Warung Bu Mi is another popular local warung on Canggu’s central Batu Bolong and one of our favourites for a cheap and convenient local meal. They're also one of the few warungs to accept card payment right now.

There’s usually a great selection of dishes in the counter, with names and prices for each dish. While everything is delicious, the curry is a must-try! It’s the main thing Emily comes here for. Although it’s best not to arrive too late, as they can run out of the best food fairly early in the night.
