Where To Stay in Seminyak? [Area & Hotel Guide]

Seminyak is one of South Bali's liveliest tourist towns, popular with everyone from honeymooners to families. But the coastal town is much bigger than most people realise, and your experience (and the price you pay) can vary greatly depending on where exactly you choose to stay.

We've spent lots of time in this part of Bali over the years and have stayed all over. To help make the most of your visit, we've created a detailed guide to where to stay in Seminyak, the pros and cons of each area, and our top hotel recommendations.

Seminyak Areas & Hotels Guide

Best Area: Petitenget & Oberoi

North Seminyak is the best area to stay for first-timers, especially the upmarket coastal regions of Petitenget and Oberoi, which are packed with hotels, restaurants, shops, and bars. It's a great area to stay if you don’t have your own transport, as most things are within walking distance.

The beachfront is lined with many high-end resorts, as well as several of Bali's top beach clubs, including the famous Desa Potato Head and elegant Ku De Ta.

Leading away from the beach, Jalan Petitenget is a lively street with many of Bali's liveliest bars and nightclubs, like Shishi and Iron Fairies, while Jalan Kayu Ayu (also known as Eat Street) is where you'll find endless fantastic local and international restaurants.

If you love to splurge while on vacation, Seminyak Square is a shopping haven at the heart of Oberoi. It's home to the modern Seminyak Village Mall and many great local boutiques. This is one of our favourite areas to go shopping in Seminyak - don't miss Bali Boat Shed for the ultimate Bali wardrobe!

Being the most popular area of Seminyak does mean the hotels here come with a higher price tag, especially if you want to stay right on the beachfront. However, you can find some good deals too, especially if you stay slightly further from the beach.

The traffic along the main roads can get heavy at peak times. But you’ll only need to use taxis when leaving Seminyak, as most other things are walkable within this area.

Where To Eat in Petitenget & Oberoi

• La Lucciola - A large open-air bamboo restaurant right on the beachfront which serves delicious homemade Italian food and imported wines. This is our favourite place for an early sunset dinner.

• KYND Community Cafe - With a mostly plant-based menu and pretty bright pink decor, Kynd is one of Seminyak’s most Instagrammable brunch cafés. And the food is great too!

Affordable Area: South Seminyak

In contrast to the upscale and stylish venues you’ll find in north Seminyak, as you progress further south, you’ll find more casual beach bars and rustic restaurants better suited to those on a tighter budget.

Your money will go much further down here than it will in Petitenget. There are still a handful of large luxury resorts, but there’s also a good selection of mid-range and budget accommodations. You can stay minutes from the beach without breaking the bank.

Most of the action down this end of town happens at the beach, with La Plancha (known for its colourful bean bags) and other lively beach bars drawing in crowds around sunset. The sandy stretch from Seminyak Beach down to Double Six Beach is always bustling with activity in the early evenings.

Away from the beach, south Seminyak is a little more spaced out than the north, so you’ll often need to take taxis to get around. This can mean quite a lot of time spent in traffic if you travel at peak times (especially around sunset).

South Seminyak has a more rustic charm. Instead of big modern malls and boutique shops, you’ll discover local markets and street-side vendors offering tourist souvenirs to take home.

Where To Eat in South Seminyak

• MoonLite Kitchen and Bar - A luxury rooftop restaurant and bar overlooking the beach and ocean. The food menu focuses on modern Southeast Asian flavours. Happy Hour cocktail deals from 4:30-6pm.

• Santorini - Our favourite Greek restaurant in Bali. It looks, feels, and tastes just like Greece!

• HUT Bali - Hidden away on a greenery-covered rooftop terrace in south Seminyak, this cosy cafe has a relaxed vibe and a delicious all-day brunch menu.

Quieter Area: Umalas

Umalas is a quiet neighbourhood that sits between Seminyak and Canggu. More popular among expats than tourists, it offers a more relaxed and laid-back alternative to the busy tourist-heavy streets of central Seminyak.

There are fewer big resorts here, so it’s best suited for those looking to rent a villa. If you're travelling in a big group or family, there are some beautiful luxury villas in Umalas with stylish tropical designs and large private pools.

The up-and-coming area has a cool, hip vibe, with a good selection of dining options surrounded by rice terraces. But you will need to use taxis to get around, as everything is fairly spread out.

A big draw of staying on the northern side of Seminyak is that you can also easily get to neighbouring Canggu. Using the shortcut, you can reach Canggu in 15 minutes or so (by scooter) and take advantage of even more beach clubs, nightlife, restaurants, and activities.

• Nook, Seminyak - A semi-outdoors bohemian cafe that overlooks the neighbouring rice fields. Serves a mix of Asian and Western dishes including delicious brunches. Has a spacious kids play area.

• Dua Umalas - Balinese-style all-day warung with a range of Indonesian and Western dishes available to pick and choose from a huge buffet counter. Great for a quick and affordable meal.

• Revolver Umalas HQ - The newest and biggest location of Bali's popular specialty coffee shop chain, Revolver. Huge, modern cafe with fantastic coffee and a delicious all-day food menu.

• South & East Brewing Co - If you love beer and good food, this tap room has 24 local and international craft beers. Grab a table in their huge garden area and enjoy some amazing South African and Indonesian-inspired dishes.
