Where to Stay in Uluwatu: Ultimate Area & Hotel Guide

Making up the southwest area of Bali's Bukit Peninsula, Uluwatu is a popular tourist region known for its dramatic coastline, beautiful white sand beaches, laid-back vibe, and world-class surf scene.

Originally a small coastal town, Uluwatu has since expanded along the peninsula's western and southern coastlines, now with many diverse areas and a huge range of accommodations to suit every style and budget.

But with so many options to choose from, figuring out the best place to stay in Uluwatu for your trip can be a little overwhelming. Fortunately, we've stayed all across the region and know the different areas well.

In this comprehensive guide, we've outlined several of the best areas of Uluwatu to stay in for different types of travellers. We've also included the best hotels, resorts, and homestays for every budget.

Where to Stay in Uluwatu: Area Guide

Below we'll delve deeper into each of these five regions of Uluwatu. We'll run you through the pros and cons of staying in each area, the best things to do and eat nearby, and a few of our favourite hotels and top accommodation options.

1. Padang Padang (Labuansait) - Best For First-Time Visitors

Padang Padang may not be our go-to beach on the Bukit (read why here), but the area around it is one of our favourite places to stay in Uluwatu.

Jl. Labuansait is the major road that runs right through southwest Uluwatu. The stretch of road leading to Padang Padang Beach is home to the highest concentration of cafes, restaurants, shops, and hotels in the region - a welcome change from the sparser pockets of the peninsula.

If you don't have your own transport and don't want to rely too heavily on taxis, we'd suggest staying somewhere along Jl. Labuansait, between the beach and Drifters Surf Shop (see on map). This puts you within walking distance of plenty of great places to eat, drink, and shop.

You'll also be walkable to Padang Padang Beach, with several other popular sandy beaches just a short distance away, including Bingin Beach to the north and Uluwatu/Suluban Beach and Thomas Beach to the south.

Keep in mind that the further east (inland) along Jl. Labuansait you go, the hillier the road gets and the more spread out the hotels become. It's still a great area to stay in Uluwatu, but it's easier with your own bike or car to get around.

Note: Bingin Beach sits just to the north and was another of our favourite areas in Uluwatu. However, major construction along the beachfront means this isn't the best place to stay right now.

• The Loft - Our favourite brunch spot in Uluwatu with a lively yet casual atmosphere and a fantastic variety of creative dishes.

• Warung Local - Local eatery that's super foreigner-friendly, serving buffet-style Balinese and Indonesian cuisine. Does a tasty nasi goreng (fried rice)!

• Milk & Madu - Casual, family-friendly Aussie restaurant that serves a variety of tasty Western dishes, including pizza, burgers, chicken parma, and more.

2. Uluwatu/Suluban Beach - Best For Nightlife

A little further south than Padang Padang, Jl. Labuansait continues to run past Uluwatu/Suluban Beach and Thomas Beach (see on map). This is another busy and walkable stretch with a good selection of restaurants, cafes, and hotels to suit all budgets.

It's also where you'll find several of Uluwatu's most popular bars and lively beach clubs, including Single Fins, Ulu Cliffhouse, and Mana. It's a great place to base yourself in Uluwatu if sipping cocktails by the ocean is top of your to do list.

Staying in this area also puts you just a 5-10 drive away from the famous Uluwatu Temple and its nightly Kecak dance, helping you beat the traffic on the way back from the popular cultural show.

• Grab a sunbed and soak up some rays at Thomas Beach

• Use the unusual infinity pool at Delphi's Warung

• Watch a movie under the stars at Ulu Cliffhouse on a Tuesday

• Go for a relaxing massage at Spring Spa

• Suka Espresso - Fantastic coffee and a great brunch menu.

• La Terrazza - Italian restaurant with a spacious terrace overlooking Uluwatu Beach and the ocean. Perfect sunset dinner spot. Has a range of tasty Italian dishes and a great happy hour.

• Lolas Cantina Mexicana - Colourful Mexican restaurant with tasty tacos, great cocktails, and a lively atmosphere.

3. Petjatu & Central Bukit - Best For A Budget-Friendly Stay

Accommodation in Uluwatu can be a little on the expensive side, especially if you want to stay close to the beach or overlooking the ocean. But staying in Uluwatu on a budget isn't totally impossible. The key is heading a little further inland.

Jl. Raya Uluwatu Pecatu is the main road that runs from Jimbaran down to Uluwatu through the middle of the Bukit Peninsula. This is where you'll find many of the more affordable accommodation options, including budget hotels and local homestays.

We'd recommend picking somewhere between the village of Petjatu and Banjar Werdhi Kosala (see map) so that you can still easily access the Ulu's best beaches.

While not as scenic as the coastal areas, the Central Bukit still has plenty to offer. You'll have the famous GWK Cultural park right on your doorstep, as well as numerous shops, cafes, and restaurants lining the busy main road.

The Central Bukit is also ideally located for easy access to the entire peninsula. From the main road, you can reach both the beaches of west Uluwatu and the scenic south coast in around a 15-20 minute drive. Nusa Dua and the eastern Bukit are also just a 20-30 minute drive away.

• Take the little ones to Ohana's Kidsparadise

• Drive to anywhere on the Bukit Peninsula in 20-30 minutes

Where to eat in this area:

• Nourish - Casual all-day restaurant serving a great menu of Western dishes.

• Tarabelle - Famous for its coffee and donuts but also does a great all-day food menu (try the pasta!) and some great dinner deals. Cute kids play area in the garden.

• BGS Coffee - Small chain serving some of the best coffee in Bali, in our opinion!

4. Melasti & South Coast - Best For Secluded Luxury

For a peaceful luxury escape away from the crowds, head down to the Bukit's southern coast. This area is home to some of the most exclusive clifftop resorts in Uluwatu, flaunting lavish private villas, stunning infinity pools, 5-star facilities, and epic Indian Ocean views.

Melasti is where you'll find the majority of luxury resorts in southern Uluwatu, but there are plenty of great options all along the coastline.

Melasti Beach is a well-developed 2km white sand beach that's easily accessible via a large road built through the cliffs. It has plenty of great amenities and is home to several upmarket beach clubs, making it one of the most popular beaches in the region.

To the east of Melasti, you'll find Pandawa Beach, another beautiful, easy-to-access beach known for its calm waters and kayaking. To the west, Nunggalan and Nyang Nyang Beaches are more challenging to reach but offer a serene natural escape away from the crowds.

• Enjoy a luxurious beach day at Sundays or Karma Beach Club

• Go paragliding along the scenic cliffs

• See top DJs and artists perform at the iconic Savaya

• Watch the Kecak Dance at Melasti Beach

• Hire a kayak at Pandawa Beach

Where to eat in this area:

• The Cave - High-end resort restaurant uniquely located inside a cliffside cave, serving a fantastic seven-course or ten-course menu. Perfect for a special occasion.

5. Balangan & North Uluwatu - Best For Families and Big Groups

Sitting between Uluwatu and Jimbaran, Balangan is a peaceful rural area known for its quiet natural beaches, private villas, and family-friendly resorts.

The two beautiful golden sand beaches, Balangan and Dreamland Beach, tend to be less crowded than those further south and have smaller waves that are better for beginner surfers. They're also great spots for watching the sunset.

The region isn't as built up as elsewhere on the peninsula, with just a few local warungs and beachside bars. However, most resorts have their own spas, restaurants, and facilities, offering everything you need for a relaxing stay.

Balangan's location in the north of the Bukit makes it a convenient base for taking day trips to other areas of Bali. It's also just a short distance from the airport.

Although it is worth noting that it's around a 30-minute drive to reach the main area of Uluwatu (Padang Padang & Suluban). It's easiest to have your own scooter or car to get around when staying in this area. Most resorts can also book you taxis and private drivers.

Pecatu Indah Resort Complex:

A little inland from Balangan is the Pecatu Indah Resort Complex, a huge privately owned resort area called which includes many hotels and resorts, as well as the New Kuta Golf Club.

The complex is a great place for affordable luxury and family-friendly stays, with several large budget-friendly resorts, including Le Grande, the Swiss-Belresort Pecatu, and The Sterling Villas.

The only downside of staying within Pecatu Indah is that it is quite remote with very few other amenities within the complex, so you will be reliant on your own transport or taxis/private drivers to get to the beaches and restaurants.

Where to eat in this area:

• Jimmy Beach Cafe - A charming little cafe on Balangan Beach with tables overlooking the ocean and a varied selection of Western dishes. Jimmys is one of the best places in the area for breakfast.

• The Cashew Tree - Casual all-day restaurant with delicious food, sitting between Dreamland and Bingin Beach.

• Rock Bar - Trendy upmarket restaurant and bar belonging to the Ayana Resort with a unique dining area perched over the cliff edge.

BONUS: Places to Stay Right on the Beach in Uluwatu

As you may have already noticed, most resorts and hotels in Uluwatu sit slightly inland or on the clifftop overlooking the ocean. Due to the area's dramatic landscape of steep limestone cliffs, there are very few places to stay in Uluwatu directly on the beach.

But if you are looking for the ultimate beach break in Ulu, there are a small handful of beach-front hotels that offer direct access to the area's sandy shores.

Staying on the beach in Uluwatu is great for a quiet beach break for a night or two. But we wouldn't suggest picking one of the below Uluwatu hotels as a base for exploring the region. Beachfront hotels require a steep walk down the cliffs to reach them, so you don't want to be coming and going too often.
