Where To Stay in Munduk, Bali [Area & Hotels]

Munduk is a village in Bali's Central Highlands, famous for its picturesque scenery and mighty waterfalls, including the four connected falls that make up the Munduk Waterfall Trek.

While Munduk itself is a small village, the name refers to the surrounding area too. Many hotels in Munduk might actually be in neighbouring villages up to 30 minutes away, making it tricky to choose where to stay.

After numerous visits to Munduk and staying in multiple different areas and hotels, this is our first-hand guide to where to stay in Munduk, including area and accommodation suggestions.

Should You Stay in Munduk?

It's definitely worth staying in Munduk if you want to experience some of Bali's most beautiful natural landscapes. It's a tranquil and lesser-visited area with some amazing waterfalls, epic trekking routes, and scenic rice terraces to explore.

You only need a few nights to experience the best of Munduk and neighbouring Bedugul. But we wouldn't suggest basing yourself here for your entire Bali trip, as it's a little far removed from other areas you'd want to visit.

We also wouldn’t recommend staying in Munduk during the peak wet season. While rain showers tend to be short and manageable in low-lying areas, they can last much longer in the central highlands.

We’ve experienced full days of heavy rain in Munduk during rainy season, which wasn’t pleasant. During the worst of the wet season, consider taking a day trip to Munduk rather than staying here.

Where to Stay in Munduk: Summary

Being such a rural region, it won’t make or break your trip if you decide to stay in Munduk Village or one of the surrounding areas. Either way, you'll need transport to reach local attractions and the starting points for the waterfall hikes.

Munduk Village

Munduk Village is a small mountain community in Northern Bali. The road through Munduk runs across a ridge so you can enjoy incredible views from accommodation on both sides of the village.

Although small, Munduk has a handful of great warungs (local restaurants) that cater to tourists, a convenience store, and a massage parlour. You can also walk down to Munduk Rice Terraces and enjoy a walk through the lush green paddies.

Most accommodations in Munduk Village tend to be affordable family-run homestays and guesthouses. We've stayed in a couple and they've never disappointed. But if you’re looking for luxury, consider staying outside of the village.

Where To Eat in Munduk Village

• Warung Heaven - A small local eatery with beautiful landscape views and delicious homemade food. We were the only customers that evening so the lovely owner prepared our food from scratch. It took a while, but worth the wait for one of the best Nasi Gorengs in Northern Bali.

Munduk Hills

Surrounding Munduk Village, the jungle-covered hills offer breathtaking views over the central highlands and are home to several of Bali's most exclusive, ultra-luxury nature resorts.

Hidden within the jungles, these resorts offer the perfect escape from the south. From your hilltop perch, you can enjoy incredible views across the valleys below while indulging in the luxury amenities on offer.

Despite being a little secluded, most resorts in this area offer on-site dining, in-house spas, and guest experiences. They can also help organise activities and day trips. Although, as you'd expect, they also come with an inflated price tag.

While most roads around the Munduk Hills can accommodate cars, they are steep, winding, and not well-maintained — so be cautious if you’re driving yourself.

Where To Eat in Munduk Hills

• The Botanist by Desa Eko – Charming bamboo restaurant that’s part of an eco glamping resort. Serves the most delicious farm-to-table food, with lots of creative Western dishes (the gnocchi was SO good!). Has cute private dining cabins overlooking the jungle.

• The Northview Bali (aka Ngiring Ngewedang Restaurant) - A modern restaurant and cafe that serves both Indonesian and Western food. Sitting on a hilltop, they have lots of sofa chairs and tables overlooking the stunning valley below. The food is a little more expensive than local warungs, but the setting makes it worthwhile.

• Ulekan Munduk - This restaurant serves delicious Indonesian cuisine in an upmarket setting, although the prices are still quite reasonable. They have a diverse drinks menu with a range of spirits and cocktails that are hard to find elsewhere around Munduk.

• Terrasse du Lac Tamblingan - If you're looking for something more affordable, this restaurant (part of the guesthouse by the same name) offers a menu of simple Western and local dishes, accompanied by picturesque views over Lake Tamblingan.
