We’ve enjoyed more than our fair share of beers in Bali, from Bintangs on the beach to craft beers at some of the island’s top breweries. In this guide, we’ll share our favourite beer brands and the best places to drink beer in Bali.
Top Beers in Bali

Best Mass-Produced Beers:
- Bintang – This is Indonesia’s most popular beer brand and tastes pretty good for the price - it's almost always the cheapest option! It’s owned by Heineken and is similar to their flagship pale lager recipe, just slightly lighter. When available, we'll choose Bintang Crystal for its smoother taste (10X better when ice cold). There’s also Bintang Radler, which has a lemon flavour and lower alcohol content.
- Beers to avoid – Bali's other mass-produced beers are poor in comparison to Bintang. Prost (also a pale lager) is one to avoid with a watery taste and sourness – a bit like drinking a cheap supermarket brand back home. Singaraja and Bali Hai are okay, but in our opinion, nothing special.

Best Craft Beers:
- Island Brewing – Produces balanced, slightly hoppy but easy-to-drink beers that are perfect if you're just getting started with craft beer (self-described “gateway beers"). Their Summer Pale Ale is my go-to. It's a light and refreshing brew with citrusy flavours that you can drink all day in the Bali sun. They also produce Black Sand beers, which are made in smaller batches and have more distinct flavours.
- Beaches – One of the newer craft breweries in Bali, Beaches is now being stocked in most bars and taprooms across the island. I find their Pale Ale and Cerveza lager easy to drink with slightly tropical flavours.
- Islands of Imagination – Known simply as IOI, they are more experimental and often use local fruits and spices to create unique flavours. Their Island Hoppin’ Pale Ale is easily their best beer - flavourful but still very drinkable, with sweet malt and a slight fruitiness.
- Kura-Kura – Meaning 'turtle' in Bahasa Indonesia, Kura Kura is a Balinese craft brewery focused on clean, simple beers with low ABV and no preservatives. Their Island Ale is my favourite – perfect on a hot day in Bali.
Best Breweries & Tap Rooms in Bali
1. Black Sand Brewery, Canggu

Located along the busy street of Batu Bolong in central Canggu, Black Sands is Bali's original and most popular tap room. It's owned by the same founder as Island Brewing, who has a passion for bringing people together over good beer.
Black Sands is a large industrial venue with several bars and a huge, semi-outdoor beer garden where the long sharing tables are great for making new friends.
They have a selection of their own brews on tap, some of which are produced at their in-house microbrewery. Behind the main bar is their “beer cave,” where they also stock dozens of craft beers in cans, which you can drink in the taproom or order for delivery.
Black Sands also wins when it comes to a great vibe. Fridays are the biggest nights here, when locals and tourists descend on the brewery en masse. With DJs until midnight and two happy hours (3-6pm & 10-11 pm), the bar gets super busy, and the dance floor fills up fast.
The food here is worth mentioning too. It’s not the cheapest, but it’s worth the price (the burgers and pizzettes are our favourites). Make sure to save room for dessert because their hot chip cookie with gelato is heaven!

2. South+East Brewing, Kerobokan

Black Sands in Canggu can get extremely busy, especially on Friday nights. That's why many tourists and expats who prefer a quieter, more laid-back drinking experience now head to South+East Brewing in Kerobokan (between Canggu and Seminyak) instead.
Their beer selection is a little more diverse, often with 20+ beers on tap. South+East is owned by Islands of Imagination (IOI), so most of the beers are their own, with a range of popular and niche brews. But they usually have at least one from each of the other breweries in Bali too.
3. The Bench Brewery, Uluwatu

The Bench Brewery is a huge tap room in Uluwatu on the Bukit Peninsula. It’s a collaboration between Island Brewing and the Bench Sports Bar. The spacious taproom has around a dozen or so craft beers on tap, mostly their own brews.
Mirroring the Black Sands model, they have a large beer garden with long sharing tables - although we’ve never found it to get as busy as the breweries in Canggu and Seminyak.
The Bench Brewery is open daily until late, but Saturdays are the most lively, with live music followed by a DJ that keeps the energy going into the night. Plus, keep an eye out for special events. We went to their huge Oktoberfest party, and it was a lot of fun!
4. Lola’s, Sanur

Lola’s is a tiny bar with a lot to offer. They have the biggest selection of draft beers we’ve seen in Bali, with more than 30 when we last visited.
They serve all of the major craft beers on tap, plus fridges full of the smaller, lesser-known brands that we haven’t even mentioned. They also have lots of ciders, seltzers, and non-alcoholic beer.
Unlike the other "mega" taprooms we’ve shared in this guide, Lola’s is just a tiny bar with barely a handful of tables. The vibe is super relaxed, and it tends to attract older Aussie tourists visiting Sanur, rather than the young party crowds of Canggu.
5. Shotgun Social, Sanur

Shotgun Social is Sanur’s version of Black Sands. It's a huge semi-outdoor beer garden with an excellent selection of craft beers on tap (16 last time we visited) and an extensive food menu.
True to Sanur, it’s very family-friendly, with a large kids' play area that’s one of the best we’ve seen inside a restaurant. On Thursdays, they hold cultural dance shows in the evening too.
We’ve been here many times, and it’s sometimes packed and other times super quiet. If you’re planning to stay for dinner, we’d definitely recommend booking ahead.
6. Issho Izakaya Taproom, Seminyak

Issho Izakaya is another taproom from the team at Islands of Imagination (IOI). It's only recently opened so it's still very quiet. We visited on a weekend and were the only people there.
Their concept combines a beer garden with Japanese Izakaya. Alongside more than 20 craft beers (mostly from IOI), you can enjoy sake and Japanese-inspired dishes such as yakitori, ramen, and karaage. We had the gyozas, which were delicious and made an unexpectedly perfect pairing for our beers.
7. Pigstone Taphouse, Kedungu

Kedungu is a very quiet, up-and-coming neighbourhood on Bali’s west coast, near Tanah Lot. Despite being lesser-known, it's already well-tailored for beer drinkers, with Pigstone Taphouse serving a craft beers on tap.
The venue was created by Andrea Torelli, a former MasterChef Italia contestant, so the food here is superb. Emily had the pizza, and it was everything you’d expect from an Italian chef, while I had the burger which was also delicious!
Pigstone isn't worth going too far out of your way for, but if you're staying nearby, definitely stop by for a beer or two.
