What Is an Otonan?

Bali uses three different calendars. The standard Gregorian calendar, the Saka calendar (based on moon cycles), and the Pawukon calendar (cycles every 210 days).

The Pawukon calendar is used to determine your Otonan, most temple anniversaries, and the timing of ceremonies like Galungan and Kuningan.

For Balinese Hindus, your Otonan is considered more spiritually significant than your Western (Gregorian) birthday. It's a day for prayer, purification, and reconnecting with the energy you were born into.

How Otonans Are Celebrated

A child's first Otonan, celebrated 210 days after their birth, is the most important.

It involves an elaborate ceremony with prayers led by a priest, large offerings (called banten), and the dismantling of the Kumara shrine, which is built when a child is born to protect them until their first Balinese birthday.

Otonan continue to be celebrated every 210 days, with prayers at the family shrine, offerings, and often the gifting of bracelets to protect the wearer. In some villages, formal ceremonies are held for the first four Otonans, while others continue them lifelong.

According to the ancient Balinese science of Wariga, each day in the 210-day Pawukon calendar has a spiritual meaning.
