Review: Bubble Hotel, Nyang Nyang

The Bubble Hotel is a row of five unique bubble-style accommodations, each sitting within a spacious private garden overlooking peaceful Nyang Nyang Beach in Uluwatu. The luxury bubble rooms feature private infinity pools, spa baths, netted hammocks, and direct beach access.

We stayed in the Bubble Hotel in 2023. Here’s our full review.

Location

The Bubble Hotel is located on Nyang Nyang Beach in Uluwatu, a dreamy oasis hidden below the towering limestone cliffs on the south coast of the Bukit Peninsula.

Nyang Nyang is one of our favourite beaches in Uluwatu thanks to its natural untouched beauty and tranquil atmosphere.

Other than a couple of small shacks selling drinks - and the Bubble Hotel of course - Nyang Nyang remains largely undeveloped and untouristy compared to elsewhere in the region.

The unique bubble rooms each sit within their own private garden area overlooking the beach, with direct access to the sand via a short stone staircase.

The rooms are located on the far end of Nyang Nyang and the beach never gets too busy, so there's a good amount of privacy. We only saw a few people (and dogs) walking past during our entire stay.

However, the hotel's peaceful beachfront location does come at a price.

Nyang Nyang is one of the most difficult beaches to reach in Uluwatu. The stunning stretch of coastline can only be accessed via a steep winding path down the cliff edge.

The path to the beach is accessible by motorbikes (not cars), with a small parking area at the bottom. But the road is steep, with several sudden winding turns. It’s only suitable for very experienced riders. Most visitors choose to park at the top and walk down.

For guests of the Bubble Hotel, a bike transfer down the cliff is included with the stay. We felt extremely safe on the bikes with the local staff. I asked my driver to go slowly and she was very accommodating.

Once at the bottom, we also had to walk along the sand for around 10-15 minutes to reach the accommodation. The staff guided us the entire way and helped us with our bags.

Given the difficulty to access, it's not possible to bring large suitcases or bags down to the bubbles (unless you walk them down yourself).

You can leave your bigger luggage at the hotel's office on the clifftop. We just put the things we needed for our short stay into a couple of backpacks and took them down on the bikes.

You can call the staff whenever you want to go up/down the cliff. But we wouldn't recommend doing this too often. We stayed down on the beach for our whole stay. The staff can bring you food and anything else you might need.

The Accommodation

The Bubble Hotel has five unique bubble rooms, each set within its own private beachfront garden just a few steps from the sand.

Three bubbles feature an ocean-facing infinity pool, with a large gazebo, wooden swing, and nettled hammock hanging over the sand. We stayed in one of these.

The other two rooms have a spa bath instead of a pool. They also have a sheltered section of beach with sunloungers rather than netted hammocks.

The bubbles with a spa bath are slightly cheaper. But we'd suggest spending a little extra on one of the pool rooms. The ocean at Nyang Nyang isn't great for swimming so we spent a lot of our stay relaxing in the pool.

The bubbles themselves are fully transparent, offering amazing ocean views directly from the large cosy double bed. When the sky is clear, you can remove the upper canopy and enjoy stargazing at night.

An aircon above the bed keeps the bubble cool, even in Bali's intense heat. We found that our bubble could still get a little warm and stuffy in the direct mid-day sun, which wasn't an issue with the pool, beach, and gazebo to enjoy. The room was always pleasantly cool by the time we wanted to sleep.

Double-door entry keeps the cool air in and the bugs out. The outer door can be locked and the bed has light cloth curtains that you can shut at night for a little extra privacy.

There are lamps for when it gets dark and plug sockets with reliable power for charging phones.

The inside of the bubble also has a small storage area, some card and board games, a kettle with tea and coffee-making facilities, free filtered water, and a stocked mini-fridge (extra fee).

While the gazebo was ideal for sheltering from the sun and enjoying a glass of wine in the evening, the netted hammock was our favourite place to hang out during the day.

You can lay down some pillows, grab a drink, and listen to the soothing sound of the waves crashing below.

Each bubble also has its own private outdoor bathroom with a toilet, sink, shower, and plenty of toiletries. The bathroom sits at the back of the garden, completely sheltered by a wooden fence, canopy, and plenty of greenery.

Like any outdoor bathroom in Bali, you may have to share it with a gecko or two. But in general, we found the bathroom to be very clean and bug-free.

The Amenities

Other than a small shack selling drinks on the beach, the Bubble Hotel's remote location means there's not a lot nearby. Fortunately, the hotel offers a huge range of additional amenities and add-ons.

Water, tea, and coffee are available for free. There are also cold drinks in the mini-bar for an extra fee. But we decided to bring some drinks, a bottle of wine, and snacks with us and place them in the fridge (cheaper than buying on-site).

An all-day dining menu is available, with hot and cold food delivered directly to your bubble. The menu features a great selection of classic breakfast dishes, as well as burgers, toasties, pasta, salad, and a few local dishes.

Or for something more romantic, the hotel can also organise an intimate ocean-front dinner, a DIY BBQ, or a picnic on the beach for an extra fee.

We opted for an evening bonfire and marshmallows, which a member of staff came to set up for us once it got dark. Sitting by the beach listening to the crackle of the fire and the sound of the ocean definitely made for one of the most romantic evenings we've had in a while.

Other add-ons include:

The Staff

From the moment we arrived at the clifftop at Nyang Nyang until the minute we checked out, service at the Bubble Hotel was 5-star.

Upon arrival, we were added to a WhatsApp chat with the staff to order food and drinks, ask questions, or request a transfer whenever needed. They were super responsive and always ready to help. When we needed glasses to drink our own wine, they delivered them straight to our bubble.

A 24-hour security guard keeps an eye on the bubbles. We occasionally saw the guards taking a stroll along the beach or swapping shifts, but other than that they largely stayed out of the way.
